Entry Point 34, Island River, is one of the numbered entry points that the Forest Service uses to spread visitors across the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Your permit is valid to enter only on the date and at the entry point printed on it, and each entry point has its own daily quota for each date.
The Forest Service describes the access this way: Method of travel is paddle. Island River has two small portages, which lead to the Isabella River. The entry point sits in the Tofte District of the Superior National Forest; Tofte Ranger Station in Tofte answers questions at 218-663-7280.
From May 1 through September 30 an overnight trip needs a reserved quota permit, booked on Recreation.gov and picked up in person at an issue station on your entry date or the day before. From October 1 through April 30 the quota system is off and a free self-issued permit from a kiosk covers you. Everything else about the BWCAW stays constant: nine people and four watercraft, camp only at designated sites with a fire grate and a latrine, and no cans or glass.

From there the route is yours. The permit does not prescribe a lake chain or a campsite. It fixes which landing you start from and which day you start, and after that you camp wherever there is an open Forest Service site with a fire grate and a latrine.
The Boundary Waters was set aside in 1926, folded into the National Wilderness Preservation System in 1964, and given its own act of Congress in 1978. It runs over 1,098,000 acres and nearly 150 miles along the Canadian border, with more than 1,200 miles of canoe routes, 12 hiking trails and over 2,000 designated campsites. The quota system exists so that all of that can hold a lot of people without any of them having to look at each other.
Sound is the thing nobody warns you about. Voices carry a half mile over flat water, which is why "be quiet" is rule two on the Forest Service list and not a suggestion. Get past the first couple of portages and the traffic thins out fast: the quota is doing its work behind you, and the lake you camp on may hold two other parties or none.
Best for: Paddlers who can read a lake map, carry a boat over uneven ground, and handle a night out with no cell coverage. You do not need whitewater skill anywhere in the BWCAW.
Recommended experience: One prior canoe overnight is plenty. The Forest Service trip planning guide is the best preparation and the permit issue station will walk you through the regulations before handing anything over.
Not recommended for: Anyone unwilling to treat water, hang or canister their food, or turn back from an open crossing when the wind gets up.

Late May is cold water and few bugs; June and early July are the mosquito and black fly window; late August into September is the sweet spot for weather and quiet, with the caveat that nights get cold. October through April needs no reservation at all, just a self-issued permit from a kiosk, which is the cheapest way into this wilderness if you are equipped for it.
Ice-out is the gate. Quota permits start May 1, but water is cold enough that a capsize is a serious event and some portages are still soft.

The quota already does most of this for you. Beyond that, the reliable trick is portages: every carry between you and the landing sheds parties, and two carries in you will usually have a lake to yourself.

America the Beautiful Senior and Access passes drop the adult fee to $8 for the pass holder only, and the physical or digital pass has to be shown at pickup.
Nine people and four watercraft. The Forest Service applies that maximum everywhere and at all times, on the water, on portages and in camp, not just at the entry point. Smaller parties see more wildlife and leave less behind, which is the stated reason for the rule.
Cancel online two or more days before your entry date and the recreation fees come back; the $6 reservation fee never does. Cancel on the entry date or the day before and you are charged a $32 penalty, with anything else refunded. Cancelled permits go back into inventory at random within 24 hours, which is exactly the moment a cancellation alert is for.
Sometimes. Walk-in permits are issued at any permit issuing station on the entry date or one day prior when quota is left, but the Forest Service recommends reserving because each entry point holds a limited number. On a popular date the walk-up window is a lottery you did not enter.

A different first day of paddling and possibly a longer approach to the same water. Same wilderness, same rules, same fees.
