About this permit
Everything about Indian Peaks that makes the March on-sale morning stressful also makes this page useful. The Forest Service withholds roughly a quarter of every zone's nightly quota from that sale and releases it three days before the trip, which means a Thursday-night plan becomes bookable on Monday.
It is the same 17 backcountry zones, the same $11, and the same June 1 to September 15 season. The difference is inventory and timing: a smaller pool, released daily, and gone quickly. Recreation.gov's own description says as much: "Permits sell out quickly."
The one thing this page cannot do is large groups. The Group divisions exist only on the Full Season in Advance permit, so a party of 8 to 12 has no route through here.

How does the Indian Peaks 3-days-in-advance permit work?
The Forest Service holds back part of every zone's nightly quota from the March sale and releases it close to the date. Recreation.gov, on this permit: "About 75% of the quota for each Backcountry Zone is released for reservations for the entire season on the Full Season in Advance page. The remaining 25% is released three days before a trip could begin on this page." Its own season note adds that the permits "go on sale at the end of May, and then are released daily throughout the permit season."
Can a group of 8 to 12 use the Indian Peaks last-minute permit?
No. The large-group quota lives on the other page. Every one of the 17 backcountry zones has a paired Group division on the Full Season in Advance permit, and none of them appear on this one. We checked the live division list on 2026-08-09 and found 17 divisions here against 34 there. Recreation.gov says the same thing on the day-use permit: "If you need a large group overnight permit, please go to the Full Season in Advance Page."
Is it worth setting an alert on the Indian Peaks permit for cancellations?
Yes, on both pages. Cancelled permits go straight back into the pool. Recreation.gov states that "Quota from cancelled permits will be immediately released and available to the public upon cancellation", and that is on top of the scheduled three-day release.
