About this permit

There are four Wingate yurts, at the edge of the Wingate Campground at Dead Horse Point State Park. Each contains sleeping space for up to six people (a queen on the bottom and a full bunk bed on top, plus a pullout futon couch), with heating, air conditioning and electrical outlets, a mini fridge and microwave, tables inside and outside, lamps, a fire pit, and an outdoor propane grill with propane supplied by the park. Modern restroom facilities are within easy walking distance.

Bedding is not provided, so bring your own. Pets are not allowed within the Wingate yurts, though service animals meeting the ADA definition are permitted. No smoking or cooking is allowed inside, and tent and trailer camping is not allowed by the yurts.

The standard rate is $150 a night plus taxes, dropping to $100 plus taxes from July 7 to September 1, December 1 to 20, and January 3 to February 13. An extra vehicle is $20. Check-in is 3:00 p.m. and check-out is 12:00 p.m.

Booking runs through the Utah State Parks reservation system on a four-month rolling basis: all campsites and yurts can be reserved for up to four months prior to your arrival date. There is no water available for RV fillups anywhere in the park, there are no showers, and the nearest services are 35 miles away in Moab.

The route

The four yurts sit at the edge of the Wingate Campground, which also holds twenty electric sites and eleven hike-in tent sites. Each yurt sleeps up to six (a queen on the bottom and a full bunk bed on top, plus a pullout futon couch), with heating, air conditioning and electrical outlets, a mini fridge and microwave, tables indoors and outdoors, lamps, a fire pit and an outdoor propane grill with propane supplied by the park. Modern restrooms are within easy walking distance. From the door, the park's eight miles of hiking trails follow both rims, and the Intrepid Trail System runs nearly 30 miles of mountain biking off the mesa.

Why it matters

Dead Horse Point is 5,900 feet of exposed high desert with no showers, no water fills and 35 miles between it and the nearest services. The Wingate yurts are how you sleep on that mesa comfortably in July or January. Four of them, at the edge of the Wingate Campground, in an International Dark Sky Park, which is why they are the hardest lodging to get in the Utah State Parks system.

The feeling

Sunset comes off the rim and the La Sal Mountains go blue in the distance, and then the sky just fills. You step outside to a propane grill the park keeps stocked, cook, and go back into a heated or cooled room with a real bed and a mini fridge. It is the rare setup where the camping and the comfort are not fighting each other.

Best time to visit

The park discounts the yurts from July 7 to September 1, December 1 to 20 and January 3 to February 13. Those windows are both cheaper and easier to book, and the air conditioning and heating are exactly what make them workable. Spring and fall are the best weather and by far the hardest to get on four units. The park is open year round, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
