Mystery Canyon pro tips

About this permit

Mystery Canyon is Zion's most popular technical canyoneering route, famous for its dramatic finale: a 120-foot waterfall rappel into The Narrows. The 5-mile route includes 10+ rappels, keeper pools, and the infamous Keyhole squeeze.

Permits are highly competitive. This is considered a must-do canyon for experienced canyoneers visiting Zion.

The route

Access begins on the East Mesa Trail, which you leave near the head of the canyon to drop into the drainage. The upper canyon offers a warm-up: easy downclimbs and short rappels.

The slot deepens past the Mystery Springs pouroff. Keeper pools appear, each requiring a swim to the next anchor. The famous 'Keyhole' squeeze forces you through a vertical slot barely wide enough for a human body.

The finale is unforgettable: a 120-foot rappel through the Mystery Falls, emerging into The Narrows with river hikers watching in amazement. Exit via the Riverside Walk to Temple of Sinawava.

The feeling

The slot narrows until you're swimming through passages no wider than your shoulders. Light filters down from impossibly far above. Then the walls open and you hear it before you see it: the roar of the Virgin River. The final rappel drops through a waterfall, 120 feet of free-hanging descent with spray in your face, and you land in The Narrows surrounded by day hikers who can't believe what they just witnessed.

No water at the trailhead, and Zion warns that creek and river water throughout the park carries toxic cyanobacteria that filtering and treating will not remove. Carry everything you need.

Parking

Small informal parking at the end of the access road. Most groups arrange a shuttle, because the route finishes on the opposite side of the park from where it starts.

Getting There

Reached by dirt road from the North Fork Road on the east side of the park. Conditions vary; a high-clearance vehicle is the usual recommendation.

Treated water is available at the shuttle stop, not in the canyon. Zion's creek and river water carries toxic cyanobacteria and must not be drunk even filtered.

How do I get a Mystery Canyon permit in Zion?

On Recreation.gov permit 4251916. Anything unclaimed goes on the calendar at 10am Mountain Time on the 15th of the month after each Seasonal Lottery, which is what a cancellation alert catches. The Seasonal Lottery opens February 1, May 1, August 1 and November 1 and closes on the 25th, each covering the next calendar quarter; results are emailed two days after the close and winners have two weeks to claim. A separate Canyoneering Daily Lottery runs two days before your date.

How many people can go into Mystery Canyon per day?

Twelve. NPS: "12 people are allowed into Mystery Canyon per day. 6 of the 12 daily spots are issued via this Seasonal Lottery. The remaining 6 spots are issued via the Canyoneering Daily Lottery, two days before the desired hike." Maximum group size is 6.

When does Zion close Mystery Canyon?

Whenever it closes the Narrows. NPS: "Mystery Canyon closes whenever the park closes the Virgin River Narrows (whenever the flow of the river is above 150 CFS/4 CMS)." A permit is an opportunity, not a guarantee the route will be open on your date.

Can I camp overnight on a Mystery Canyon permit?

No. NPS states plainly that "Overnight trips are not allowed in Mystery Canyon." It is a day trip, and a long one.

Do I need my own gear for a Mystery Canyon permit?

Yes. "Mystery Canyon is a technical canyoneering route, requiring your own ropes, harnesses, and often wetsuits or drysuits. Guiding is not allowed in the Zion Wilderness. Anyone applying for this lottery must have their own skills and equipment to safely complete their desired trip."
