Round Valley Recreation Area

Welcome to Round Valley Recreation Area, the only NJ State Park that offers wilderness camping, each campsite is in a secluded clearing in the woods along the south-eastern shoreline of Round Valley Reservoir at the base of the Cushetunk Mountain. Wilderness camping is a challenging experience that is recommended for experienced campers, backpackers and boaters, these campsites are not recommended for young children or for the elderly due to the difficulty and distance (3-6 miles hiking mountainous terrain or 1-4 miles paddling by boat). There is no vehicle access to the Round Valley campground. Camper Check-in Required: Campers must check-in at the Park Office. Check-in is required by 4:00pm so that campers can obtain their permits, prepare for the trek ahead, and arrive at their campsite before dark. Campers who cannot check-in by 4:00pm cannot go camping. Hiking/Biking: Wilderness campsites are only accessible by boating or by hiking/mountain biking 3-6 miles along the steep and rugged Cushetunk Trail with all of their camping gear. There is no vehicle access to the Round Valley campground. Boating: Campers boating to their sites must book a waterfront site, designated with the letter ‘W’, e.g. Campsite #007W. Campers need to bring their own boat, bring the appropriate PFD's (Personal Flotation Device), adhere to the 9.9 horsepower limit, understand the wind warning system, and know/comply with all park and marine rules & regulations. If any of the four wind warning lights is on, then boating will be prohibited and campers must make alternate plans hike to/from their sites or delay/extend their reservation. Due to variable winds boaters are encouraged to follow the coastline and to not travel across the middle of the reservoir. The distance from the camper launch to the campground is 1–4 miles.
