About Limber Flag Yurt

Overview

Limber Flag Yurt is located in the Ashley National Forest, approximately 20 air miles north of Vernal, in eastern Utah. It provides year-round primitive lodging for guests. The yurt is open for reservations all months except November, April and May. Hiking, off-roading, fishing, hunting, skiing, and snowshoeing are the area's most popular activities. There is great opportunity for wildife viewing, photography practice, and exploring all that the Ashley National Forest has to offer.

Call the District Office at (435) 789-1181 three business days prior to a reserved visit to confirm door lock combination. District Office is closed Saturday and Sunday. Lock combination is REQUIRED to enter yurt.

Recreation

In summer months, numerous hiking, biking and off-road trails crisscross the area. In winter months, endless cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails are right out the door. Stop by the Ashley National Forest's front desk for maps of these trails.

There is also great opportunity here for birding, wildlife photography, and other activities. Flaming gorge lodge, red canyon lodge, and Dutch John are just down the highway. Enjoy a warm meal before/after your stay at the yurt, or try out the fishing! There are many recreation activities around this yurt!

Facilities

The yurt is approximately 314 square-feet (less than 20 feet in diameter) and has limited amenities. No plumbing, running water, or electricity is provided. The maximum capacity of overnight guests at the yurt complex is (8) people. Tent camping is allowed outside.

Two bunk beds with full size mattresses are provided, to sleep four to eight people. No linens, bedding or pillows are provided. There is a plastic covering on the mattresses that stays with the yurt. The yurt is equipped with a heavy-duty propane camp stove for cooking, a wood-burning stove for heat, folding chairs, and a bench to store materials.

Although we try to keep a 10" skillet, a medium sized pot, a large water boiling pot, and some mugs there, it is a good idea to bring your own as needed. These ammenities go missing at the yurts occassionally. Guests must bring all personal cooking supplies.

The yurt remains locked; call the Vernal Ranger District office, at (435) 789-1181, three business days prior to arrival, to confirm the combination lock code. COMBINATION CODE REQUIRED to enter yurt. (Some combination locks used have off-set entry lines. If code is not working, try off-setting entry line).

A portable propane Coleman lantern is supplied but guests must bring propane bottles and mantles. We are working on switching all the yurts over to solar and crank powered lanterns to avoid guests having to bring propane. The Forest Service provides propane for the cook stove and wood for the wood stove. A vault toilet is located outside the yurt to the north west, about 20 yards.

Natural Features

The yurt is situated at the edge of a clearing, at an elevation of 9,000 feet. Pines and aspens surround the clearing and offer some shade. From the deck, guests are awarded beautiful views south of the yurt, overlooking the pine forest, sagebrush flats, and grassy meadows. Big game, birds, and other various willdife are abundant. Beautiful wildflowers surround the area, attracting in a wide range of pollinators.

Notices from Recreation.gov

You may notice some wood debris on your way into the yurt. There was a planned fuels treatment May 2025. There may be residual wood on the road up to the yurt during and after this. This is in preparation for the road to be reconstructed and improved, along with creating a fire break near the yurt. The yurt is supposed to be replaced fall 2026, in preparation for that, the road is being prepped for that work this season.

Call the District Office at (435) 789-1181 three business days prior to a reserved visit to confirm door lock combination. District Office is closed Saturday and Sunday. Lock combination is REQUIRED to enter yurt.

USE YOUR OWN DISCRETION WHEN PARKING/DRIVING ON SNOWY OR MUDDY ROADS. THE FOREST SERVICE DOES NOT PROVIDE RESCUE SERVICES. Please call the non emergency dispatch number 435-789-4222 if needing help.

It takes approximately 2-3 hours to ski to the yurt in the winter; the trail is somewhat difficult with sections winding through trees and a couple of hill climbs exceeding a 10 percent slope.

No water is available at the yurt; guests must bring their own supply. There is one large water pot in the yurt to boil water, but guests should bring extra cookware as desired. There should also be a 10" skillet and a medium sized pot for guests to use. These do occassionally go missing though, so it is recommended to bring your own cookware in case.

To avoid smoke in the yurt, make sure to run the fire HOT . When you start the fire in the stove initially, it will smoke heavy until a proper draft is built. This may take a while, so get settled in while you let the fire work up. You can open the sun dome on the top of the yurt and open the front door to help clear out the smoke from the initial fire. Once the draft is built, you should be able to close the door of the stove and work with the dampers to build a fire that keeps you toasty warm!

A high-clearance vehicle equipped with four-wheel drive is required to access the yurt trailhead. During summer months, you can drive right to the entrance of the yurt. The road is rocky and remote, so it will require a 4x4 vehicle with good clearance, as the road can be rocky, muddy, and bumpy. Road access is not suitable for RV or travel trailers; therefore, no RV or travel trailers are allowed. From approximately Dec. 1 to March 31, non-motorized travel (cross-country skiing or snowshoeing) is required to access the yurt; snowmobiles are not allowed on the trail.
