About this permit
The Linville River drops 2,000 feet through a 12-mile gorge on its way out of the Blue Ridge, and Congress made the whole 11,653 acres wilderness in 1964. It is the most rugged terrain in North Carolina and, on a summer Saturday, some of the busiest, which is why the Grandfather Ranger District caps weekend camping.
The cap is 50 people a night, and only on nights that matter: Friday and Saturday from May through October, plus the Sunday before a holiday Monday. This permit sells 35 of those 50. They go up on the first day of the previous month at 10 a.m. Eastern, all at once, for the whole month.
The permit itself is free. You pay Recreation.gov's $6 reservation fee, you do not reserve a campsite, and you are limited to two nights and a group of 10.

Best time to visit
October, for dry rock, cool nights and the best color in the southern Appalachians. Spring is green and wet, and July and August are humid enough to make a rim climb genuinely unpleasant.

On the first day of the previous month, at 10 a.m. Eastern. The Forest Service writes it out on the permit itself: "The 1-month window opens on the 1st day of the previous month at 10am ET. For example, permits for June are available on May 1st at 10am ET, all permits for July are available on June 1st at 10am ET, etc." That release covers 35 of the 50 nightly spots.
How many people can camp in Linville Gorge on a permit night?
Fifty, across the whole wilderness. Recreation.gov: "50 people total will be permitted per night. 70% of the quota (35 per night) is available 1 month in advance... 30% of the quota (15 per night) is set aside for last-minute permits reservable 3 days in advance." The count is people, not groups or campsites, and one trip leader can reserve for up to 10.
Which nights actually need a Linville Gorge camping permit?
Friday and Saturday nights from May 1 through October 31, plus the Sunday night before a federal holiday Monday. For 2026 the Forest Service lists those extra Sundays as May 24, September 6 and October 11. Outside that, the agency says permits "are not required for day use, roadside camping, or camping on Table Rock," and November through April is a non-quota season with unlimited numbers.
Do I reserve a specific campsite with the Linville Gorge permit?
No. The Forest Service is clear that "There are no designated campsites within the Wilderness. The permit system is based on the total number of people camping per night and does not require reserving a campsite." You are buying a headcount for a night, then camping on an established site wherever you end up. Stays are capped at two nights and three days, and groups at 10 people.
