About this permit

The overnight permit is the one most John Day trips need. It covers one group for the length of the trip, and BLM ties it to your launch date and launch segment rather than to a campsite. You camp where you find a spot, not at an assigned site.

Quota is per segment and it is small. BLM publishes 8 groups a day on Segment 3A, 9 on 3B, 5 on 2A, 4 on 2B, 4 on 1A, 2 on 1B, and 2 long-distance permits. Fall high season on Segments 1A and 1B drops to 2 and 1 respectively.

Half of each launch date's quota releases four months out at 7 a.m. Pacific and the rest one month out. Cancelled permits go straight back on the Recreation.gov calendar, which is where an alert pays off on a segment that sells out in seconds.

John Day Overnight trip highlights

  1. A remote desert canyon with limited emergency access and spotty cell service

  3. Camping on your own judgement rather than at reserved sites
  4. A 14-day stay limit, except on Segments 1A and 1B where BLM allows one night per segment year-round
  5. Primitive, unsigned take-outs that BLM tells you to scout beforehand

John Day Overnight FAQ

How competitive is a John Day River overnight permit?

It depends entirely on the segment. BLM allocates as few as 2 groups a day on Segment 1B and 9 on Segment 3B, and half of each date's quota is held back until one month before launch.

Do I reserve campsites with a John Day River overnight permit?

No. The permit is tied to your launch date and segment, not to a campsite. You choose where to camp on the river.

How long can I stay on a John Day River overnight trip?

14 days, except on Segments 1A and 1B where BLM sets a stay limit of one night per segment year-round.

What happens if I skip a John Day River permit without cancelling?

BLM flags you as a no-show and puts the trip leader on a restricted list that blocks another John Day permit for two years.
