About Tusayan - Montane Campground

Overview

COMMERCIAL TOUR GROUPS ARE NOT ALLOWED AT TUSAYAN-MONTANE CAMPGROUND

Commercial operators MUST obtain a special use permit to operate on National Forest System lands, including Tusayan-Montane Campground. Due to high public demand, Kaibab National Forest will not be issuing any special use permits for Tusayan-Montane Campground until further notice. Therefore, no commercial tour groups are allowed at Tusayan-Montane Campground. All violators will be removed from the campground immediately and given a fine for violating the Code of Federal Regulations.

Perhaps the biggest draw to Tusayan-Montane Campground in northern Arizona is its proximity to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Located just 4 miles south of the park entrance in beautiful Kaibab National Forest, Tusayan-Montane is a quiet, peaceful campground that generally has open camping sites. A nature trail weaves its way through the pine forest, and many more hiking opportunities are within a short drive. The facility can accommodate individual and family visitors, as well as large groups up to 75 people.

Recreation

The campground The campground has a 3 mile loop trail as well as a shorter hikes that allow visitors to observe local flora and fauna.

Elsewhere, the nearby town of Tusayan offers horseback riding, helicopter rides and other tours.

Many hiking, sightseeing, cultural history and outdoor recreation opportunities lie just a few miles away in Grand Canyon National Park.

Facilities

The campground has 142 single campsites across 5 loops, each accommodating up to eight people maximum. There are also 18 double campsites that can accommodate up to 14 people.

30 of these sites are non-reservable and only available on a first-come, first-served basis. All other sites are reservable. Sites include picnic tables, fire pits and grills, and vehicle parking, with access to nearby pit toilets.

There are also two group sites. Group Site A accommodates up to 75 people. Group Site B accommodates up to 50 people. Groups larger than 75 people can reserve both Group Sites A and B. The group sites have picnic shelters, tables and tent pads.

Due to limited water supply, there is no water available to fill RV tanks.

Natural Features

Tusayan-Montane is situated in a pleasant Ponderosa pine and Gambel oak forest at an elevation of 6,600 ft. The forest is nestled on the Colorado Plateau, an area of land that was uplifted by geologic processes. Summer temperatures range from 50 degrees at night to 80-90 degrees during the day. Summer thunderstorms, known as the monsoon, can build up quickly, especially during July and August. Snow is common from December through March.

Nearby Attractions

Grand Canyon National Park's South Rim, just 4 miles away, is a must-see for Tusayan-Montane campers. The adjacent town of Tusayan has a wide array of amenities, such as a gas station, restaurants, small grocery store, banks, hotels, internet access, mountain biking trails and many different tours.

Commercial operators MUST obtain a special use permit to operate on National Forest System lands, including TUSAYAN-MONTANE Campground. Single campsites accommodate a maximum of 8 people and 2 vehicles. Double campsites accommodate a maximum of 14 people and 3 vehicles.

Group Site A can accommodate a maximum of 75 people and 15 vehicles. Group Site B can accommodate a maximum of 50 people and 15 vehicles.

Groups that arrive with more people than allowed will be asked to move and will be charged for an additional site.

Additional vehicles may be accommodated depending on the site. Each additional vehicle is subject to a fee of $5 per vehicle, per night.

Check-in time is between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m.; check-out time is 12:00 p.m.; groups must check-in with campground hosts upon arrival.

No utility hookups are available.

Generators are allowed at Tusayan-Montane Campground. Generators can only be operated from 6am to 9pm.

Due to limited water supply, RVs are not permitted to fill up water tanks at the campground.

No dumping of waste or grey water inside the campground; there is a dump station and water fill inside Grand Canyon National Park.

No shower or laundry facilities are available; these services are available inside Grand Canyon National Park.

Pull-through sites can accommodate RVs up to 35 feet in length.

No use of off-highway vehicles inside this facility.
